An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.
One account, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Politicians are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
